Flat Woven
Flat woven area rugs are woven on a handloom by hand or by weaving vertical yarns through the horizontal yarns on a machine. These rugs are flat and do not have a pile. Therefore, they do not have the thickness like hand-knotted or hand-tufted rugs. They are usually of lighter weight than other rugs constructed of wool. Some of these rugs are of cotton construction. Since they do not have a backing on them these rugs are often reversible having the same designs on both sides. You may hear them referred kilims, sumaks, or dhurris.
